Learning Curriculum

Our education curriculum is designed to engage and capture students on the job learning. Unlike traditional internship contracts- our approach is not to set goals up front, but to nurture learning as it occurs, engage students in reflecting on what they have experienced, and guide their exploration beyond their immediate work station or duties.

Every two weeks, a guiding and focusing topic asks them to either interview staff or colleagues, explore the role of academics in the workplace, describe examples of their work, or discuss workplaces events. Over time, as they continue to become a stronger team member with their employer partner and supervising mentor, our teens come to see their workplaces as meaningful environments with learning opportunities behind every new door.

Curriculum Sequence:

  • Do You Know Your Job?
  • Knowing Your Company and Your Contribution
  • Academics Matter – Math, Science, and Technology
  • Academics Matter – Reading, Writing, and Communication
  • On-Going Assignment – choose from:
  • Reflection on recent work place event of learning experience.
  • Interview and/or job shadow a co-worker.
  • Work place skill they’ve been working to develop.
  • How Has This Job Changed You?

A Comprehensive Evaluation:

These worksheets provide rich stories and details of the learning and mentorship that occurs in their internship- which often goes far beyond and goal we might have imagined at the outset. They provide valuable documentation for the teens and their mentors, illustrating what they learned.

Applications For Use In Schools:

We also hope that they provide a valuable resource for teachers for class discussion or extra credit, and for counselors who are seeking portfolio examples to demonstrate student skills and the application of their education and knowledge.
